Irish budget carrier Ryanair is to launch a further nine routes from its Bergamo Orio Al Serio base near Milan at the turn of the year.
The new routes include three domestic connections – Bari, Alghero and Cagliari – linking Milan with destinations in southern Italy.
Ryanair’s Cagliari-Bergamo link marks its second domestic route to the Sardinian city and will see it come up against Italian budget operator MyAir, which has also today announced plans to fly on the route. MyAir will begin its flights from Bergamo to Cagliari on 17 September, while Ryanair will begin daily flights on the route in December.
The new Alghero link also marks Ryanair’s second domestic connection from the airport. It already connects the Sardinian city with Pisa, although it was forced to drop a connection to Rome last year as a result of Italy’s controversial introduction of public service obligation (PSO) status to a string of Sardinia-to-mainland Italy links. Bergamo is not covered by the Sardinian PSO status.
Ryanair’s other new routes include connections to Billund in Denmark, Swedish city Gothenburg, Latvian capital Riga, Tampere in Finland, Santander in northern Spain and Porto in Portugal. The latter will operate daily, while all other routes have three or four frequencies a week. Ryanair will launch the routes over December and January.
The expansion will see Ryanair base two additional aircraft at Bergamo – taking the total up to six – and serve 34 destinations from the airport. Yesterday Ryanair announced nine new routes from its Girona base near Barcelona.
