Saab expects to earn SKr2 billion ($192 million) after the selection of the NH Industries NH90 helicopter by Finland, Norway and Sweden. Finland's Patria also expects to be a major beneficiary of offset work associated with the deal.
The three countries along with Denmark had joined together to acquire helicopters. Although Denmark went it alone, ordering 14 AgustaWestland EH101s, the other three have ordered 52 NH90s, and placed 17 options.
Saab will be responsible for developing the tactical system for Sweden's NH90s and building 200 forebodies for the helicopter.
Finland's Patria says that it is in a strong position to assemble the helicopters and engines as it previously signed memoranda of understanding covering such work. Patria says it is also negotiating to build NH90 sections including the rear fuselage, rear ramp, sponsons and sliding doors.
The engines - either General Electric CT7s or Rolls-Royce Turbomeca RTM322s - could be built at Patria's engine assembly and maintenance facility at Nokia. EADS, owner of NH Industries partner Eurocopter, acquired 26.8% of Patria in June this year.
Finland will take 20 NH90s for transport, Norway will use 14 as naval aircraft and Sweden will take 18 transport and anti-submarine warfare helicopters.
Deliveries are expected between 2004 and 2009.
