Saab is promising a new era of heads-up display performance with a "non-holographic" single-box unit that promises to slash system weight to 6kg from the approximately 26kg of projection systems while offering improved performance for new or upgraded aircraft.

Henrik Näslund, a marketing executive for Saab electronic defence systems, said the RIGS system is in flight testing and at a development stage that would have it ready to field in 18-24 months from a customer order. Saab is working with the "big OEMs" to get it in front of potential customers.

Obvious candidates include military, police, coast guard and search and rescue operators, but Näslund says offshore operators are also targets, as a number of recent incidents would have been less likely had aircraft been fitted with a RIGS system, Saab believes.

A red rather than green display offers better sighting

The technology is compatible with the latest generation of enhanced vision sensor (EVS) technology and also allows a red display, which has been shown to be better than the traditional HUD green - a byproduct of the phosphorus used to achieve sufficient brightness - for helicopter air-to-ground sighting relative to the cluttered ground/sky background.
