An autonomous helicopter will be the focus of Saab's first university-based research centre in Sweden, which begins work on 1 September.

Unmanned air vehicle technology is one of several areas of focus for the new "centre of excellence", which has a budget of €1 million ($1.2 million) a year. The others include decision support, aircraft construction and production, and man-machine interaction. Known as Linklab, the centre will be based at the University of Linkoping in south-east Sweden.

Sven Stafstrom, the university's project leader for Linklab, says it is choosing "projects to work on from 1 September. The funding will come from existing projects and other external organisations, such as the European Union. We hope [the centre] will expand in future."
