Saab has appointed a new chief executive to replace Åke Svensson, who will leave the Swedish company later this year.

Håkan Buskhe will take the top post at the defence and security company by 1 November. The 46-year-old is now chief executive of E.On Sweden and president of E.On Nordic.

"Buskhe has all the requirements needed to lead Saab in its development as an increasingly global high-technology company," says Saab chairman Marcus Wallenberg.

The confirmation of Svensson's successor came just days after Saab posted its results for the first quarter of 2010.

Although boosted by a SKr2 billion ($276 million) commitment from Sweden's Defence Materiel Command to further develop the Gripen fighter, the figures were hit by a SKr160 million provision against a civil security contract.

"The global economic environment continues to impact Saab's markets negatively, and we still see delays in customers' decision-making processes," Svensson said on 21 April. "We remain cautious regarding order intake and foresee sales on the same level as 2009."

Svensson will join the Association of Swedish Engineering Industries as president on 1 September.
