SAAB IS DIVIDING its Saab Military Aircraft division into four new units from the beginning of 1997.

The divisions will be dedicated to the JAS39 Gripen; the handling of resales, retrofits, and upgrades of older aircraft; research and development; and joint programmes.

Some work from Saab turboprop subsidiary Saab Aircraft - such as research into future projects - will be transferred to the new units. Saab Aircraft will remain otherwise untouched, as will the other Saab subsidiaries (Saab Combitech, Saab Dynamics and Saab Training Systems).

Saab says that the new structure will allow each division to focus more clearly on its own market.
