June 1996 Sabena chief executive Paul Reutlinger unveils Horizon 98 restructuring plan designed to restore carrier to profitability by 1998. Plan includes up to 1,200 job losses and wage freeze.

Feb 1999 Sabena announces a return to the black making a net profit of BFr703 million ($19.5 million) in 1998.

Oct 1999 Sabena's Atlantic Excellence agreement with Delta Air Lines, Swissair and Austrian Airlines ends abruptly following Delta's decision to form a global alliance with Air France.

Oct 2000 Sabena drops some long-haul routes, seeks 500 job cuts and takes other cost-cutting measures to halt losses.

Jan 2001 Swissair and Belgian Government inject e250 million ($228 million) into Sabena (€50 million and €00 million respectively).

July 2001 Swissair strikes deal with Belgian Government to end its commitment to increase Sabena stake to 85%. The shareholders agree to inject €30 million into Sabena with 60% coming from Swissair.
