Ethiopian Airlines believes that a Boeing 737-800 escaped damage after overrunning at Entebbe airport, Uganda.
It had been conducting the ET338 service from Addis Ababa, arriving in darkness on 3 January.
The aircraft (ET-ATV) landed on runway 17, which is almost 3,660m (12,000ft) in length, at around 00:40.
Weather data for Entebbe airport at this time shows good visibility, although it points to the presence of cumulonimbus cloud.
Ethiopian Airlines says the jet “skidded off the runway by a few metres”. Runway 17 ends just 200m from the shore of Lake Victoria.
The airline states that passengers and crew were “safely deplaned”, adding: “There is no damage to the aircraft.”
It has not given any other details on the circumstances of the overrun.
Uganda’s civil aviation authority says the aircraft was withdrawn from the end of the runway at 10:15 and operations at the airport resumed.
Transport minister Monica Azuba Ntege says flights affected by the temporary suspension of operations included services by Turkish Airlines, EgyptAir, Kenya Airways and RwandAir.
Flight Fleets Analyzer lists the jet as a 2006 airframe, previously operated by Air China and leased from AerCap.
