Widespread flooding across the airfield caused by storm surges forced Osaka’s Kansai International airport to suspend operations at noon, local time, on 4 September.
The surges have been caused by the approach of Typhoon Jebi to the area, and pictures on social media show runways, taxiways and aprons at the airport have been inundated by at least two to three metres of water.
In addition to the storm surges, a tanker ship carrying fuel has collided with the main bridge linking the airport, which is built on a man-made island, with the mainland. All ground transport to the island has been suspended.
The airport says that 158 flights have been cancelled, and has not advised when it expects to re-open.
Japan Airlines, All Nippon Airways and Peach having cancelled their flights to and from Kansai, and have warned that services at other airports around Japan, particularly Haneda, Narita and Nagoya Chubu may also be affected by the typhoon.
