Pratt & Whitney will open a new ceramic matrix composites research and development facility focused on aerospace applications.
Pratt & Whitney will open a new ceramic matrix composites research and development facility focused on aerospace applications.
The 60,000 sq ft (5,574 sq m) facility will be sited in Carlsbad, California the engine maker says, but did not state when it will be operational.
Ceramic matrix composites are lighter and have higher temperature capabilities, which P&W says will equate to better efficiency for its engines.
“[Ceramic matrix composites] will enhance P&W’s next-generation commercial and military engines to deliver benefits that include increased range, increased fuel efficiency and reduced emissions,” the engine-maker says.
