SAS is on the verge of phasing out its Boeing MD-80 aircraft fleet after signing an agreement to sell four MD-82/87 aircraft.

The agreement also provides the buyer with an option on a further 19 MD-82s and 10 spare engines from SAS.

If the option is exercised, it will complete the phase-out of SAS's MD-80 fleet, which once numbered more than 70 aircraft.

The first unit in the four-aircraft sale was delivered on 11 September, with the remaining three due to be delivered in the fourth quarter.

If the option is exercised, the additional aircraft and engines will be delivered on a gradual basis from Q1 2013 to Q1 2015.
