XM Satellite Radio has opened its headquarters and broadcast centre in Washington DC. The opening comes as its first satellite, XM-1,to be launched next year, was undergoing tests at Hughes Space and Communications. The 7m (23ft) tall 18kW version of the heavyweight HS-702 spacecraft bus will have a solar array wingspan of 40m.
