Russian manufacturer NPO Saturn has disclosed that tests of its modernised D-30KP Burlak powerplant, designed for retrofitting Ilyushin Il-76 transports, show the engine meets declared thrust expectations.

NPO Saturn is to proceed with constructing 10 test engines following the results, which demonstrated the ability of the powerplant to deliver 28,700lb thrust (128kN). Alexander Elkes, chief designer of the D-30KP, says the results are “excellent” and mean the engine is “closely approaching” its final standard design.

The Burlak is designed to upgrade the Il-76 and provide 11% greater cruise efficiency for the type, and meet International Civil Aviation Organisation environmental requirements.
