NASA has selected three instrument proposals for implementation for the international Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) mission. The mission is the first in a series of Living with a Star (LWS) programme flights, which are designed to address "aspects of the sun-Earth system that affect life and society". SDO will be launched into a sun-pointing geosynchronous orbit in August 2007.

The instruments are the Heliospheric and Vector Magnetic Imager, Solar Heliospheric Activity Research and Prediction atmospheric imaging and white light coronagraph instruments, and the Extreme Ultraviolet Variability Experiment.
