Sikorsky has delivered the first four MH-60R multi-mission helicopters to the US Navy as the programme gears up for a radical change from re-manufacturing of existing aircraft to a new-build operation.

The USN received outline approval to switch direction in December with a revised development, test and production schedule based on all-new helicopters. It had already funded some low-rate initial production (LRIP) and development work however, which means that Sikorsky will deliver seven re-manufactured SH-60B Seahawks this year.

These have been retrofitted with a Lockheed Martin glass cockpit, a new cabin, strengthened floor and provisions for future growth. The MH-60R will get new sensors and avionics but as part of the revised plan the aircraft will now receive new General Electric T700-701C turboshafts, dynamic components, tail rotor and landing gear.

An LRIP purchase of six new helicopters is expected in 2004 and a follow-on buy of 12 aircraft a year later will launch full-rate production. The machines should be in service by the end of 2005.

The USN is also funding investigations into improved powerplant durability. There is continued interest in the Common Engine Programme launched by the US Army for the UH-60X Black Hawk upgrade but the protracted development cycle means that USN is unwilling to hold up MH-60R production until the powerplant is available.
