Bad weather off the Canadian east coast forced the suspension of search efforts for the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) of the Swissair Boeing MD-11 that crashed into the Atlantic on 2 September.

Search teams plan to resume the search for the CVR when weather conditions improve. US Navy teams were due to arrive at the scene to assist with the search, bringing with them new search equipment, and are accompanied by a salvage ship that was used in the recovery of wreckage of the Trans World Airlines Boeing 747-100 that crashed off Long Island in 1996.

Meanwhile, chief crash investigator Vic Gerden told reporters in Canada that signs of "heating" had been detected on recovered wreckage from the aircraft's cockpit. He would not describe the pieces, and would not speculate on how the heat damage might have occurred.
