South Korea is considering upgrading its air force's 180 Lockheed Martin F-16s to improve interoperability with its new Boeing F-15Ks. Industry sources say the air force has submitted a request to the US government for data on several systems, including Boeing's Joint Direct Attack Munition guidance kit, Raytheon's AIM-9X air-to-air missile, the Vision Systems International Joint Helmet Mounted Cueing System and the Link 16 datalink.

The air force has been considering an F-16 upgrade, but budget constraints have blocked procurement of new equipment. The service requires a datalink capability to enable its F-16s to operate with its new Link 16-equipped F-15Ks.
