Shorts Missile Systems (SMS) has won a new £200 million ($333 million) UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) contract to supply the British Army with Starstreak high-velocity missiles for low level air defence operations. The production agreement will equip British Army air defence forces responsible for front line, rapid reaction and reserve force operations. British Army air defence units are scheduled to continue using the Starstreak until 2020. The weapon entered service with the British Army in 1997. SMS is adapting the Starstreak for use as an air-to-air missile compatible with attack helicopters, particularly the UK Army Air Corps' GKN Westland WAH-64D Apache Longbows.
