Sikorsky is finalising a joint venture deal with Shanghai Little Eagle Science and Technology (SLEC) to build the three-seat Schweizer 300 light helicopter. The move is designed to give the US manufacturer an entry into China's embryonic helicopter market and allow it to build its presence with the larger S-76 and S-92 machines.

Sikorsky last September announced its intention to partner SLEC and establish a new joint venture, Shanghai Sikorsky Helicopter, to develop "a light civil helicopter for the domestic market". Under the deal, Sikorsky will progressively transfer to China assembly of an existing piston-powered machine, starting with kits and eventually expanding to full licence production. The agreement with Schweizer is expected to be announced during this week's Heli Expo show in Orlando. Sikorsky will also assist with certification and marketing of the $250,000 Model 300.

The 900kg (2,000lb) class helicopter is powered by a single Textron Lycoming HIO-360 piston engine and is used typically by private owners and commercial pilot training schools.

Sikorsky's activities in China have been muddied by the US government's embargo on selling parts to support China's military S-70s. China's Jingdezhen Helicopters supplies the tail section for the medium-lift S-92. Sikorsky recently sold two S-76s to the Chinese communications ministry.
