SilkAir is readying for major fleet expansion as it prepares to serve more destinations in China, India, Indochina and Thailand.
The wholly-owned Singapore Airlines (SIA) subsidiary is in advanced talks with Airbus to convert six A320 family options into firm orders, say industry sources. The carrier already operates five International Aero Engines V2500-powered A320s and four smaller A319s. A sixth A320 is already on firm order for delivery next year.
SilkAir says it is "considering" placing more orders but is "still in discussions". However, it confirms current planning calls for the airline to receive an average of one additional aircraft a year over the next five years.
SIA's regional unit has opened new routes and taken over some destinations from its parent. Sources suggest SilkAir could take more routes as SIA phases out its A310s.
