Lockheed Martin has proposed linking with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to design and implement the Space Interferometry Mission (SIM), a major observatory in the space agency's Origins programme. SIM will measure the positions of stars using two sets of telescopes arrayed along a 10m boom, creating a resolution equivalent to that obtained by a 10m-diameter mirror. The SIM is scheduled to be launched in 2005.
