SINGAPORE AND Taiwan have agreed to develop jointly a $200 million commercial television, telephony and data-communications satellite system, to be inaugurated in 1998. Singapore had earlier planned to develop its own system, with six geostationary orbital slots reserved.

The country's technological university has also signed a $7.7 million deal with Surrey Satellite Technology of the UK for the development and launch in 1997 of a Micro-satellite which, with a control centre, will provide data-communications services from low-Earth orbit, as a precursor to a planned collaborative, operational four-satellite system.
