Bombardier foresees a big market in the Asia-Pacific region for its Challenger series of aircraft modified for special operations missions.

Stephane Villeneuve, vice-president specialised aircraft at the Canadian manufacturer, says the Challenger series's global popularity ensures a robust support network for nations operating small fleets of special mission types.

He declines to discuss specifics about possible customers in the region, but says the opportunities here are “tremendous” for special mission aircraft.

The company is promoting platforms including the Q400 turboprop, and Challenger 650 and Global 5000/6000 business jets for adaption.

Special missions has been a significant theme at this year’s Singapore show. Simmering territorial disputes in the South China Sea have placed a premium on assets that can perform intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance and other missions in the littoral environment.
