Singapore warships equipped with sonar equipment are making their way to the location where possible debris of the missing Indonesia AirAsia Airbus A320 has been spotted.
A source tells Flightglobal that three red and white fragments have been spotted in waters 50-70km off Pangkalan Bun, in Central Kalimantan province.
Another source from Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency Basarnas confirmed the spotting and that of the ships' movement. However, it says that it remains to be seen if, indeed, the fragments are from the missing flight QZ8501, which disappeared on Sunday 29 December while operating the Surabaya-Singapore route.
The search to locate the missing aircraft has entered its third day, with the search area expanded to 13 sectors, up from seven sectors on Monday 30 December, and four sectors on 29 December. it focused on yesterday, and the original four sectors on the first day of the search mission.
The search now extends over a large portion of the Java Sea, including the areas around Bangka and Belitung Islands. Aircraft and ships from several nations are participating in the search mission.
