A major programme to upgrade the capabilities of the Republic of Singapore Air Force's 10 Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules transports made a significant advance recently, with the redelivery of its first modified example.

Handed over by Singapore Technologies Aerospace in late September, the C-130B had undergone an extensive flight deck upgrade using technology provided by Rockwell Collins Communications.

"With this upgrade, the RSAF gains a modern digital cockpit enabling greater mission effectiveness for their C-130 fleet and providing them with access to global airspace," says Dave Nieuwsma, head of mobility and rotary wing solutions at Rockwell Collins.

The upgrade includes a new flight management system, central engine displays to replace analogue gauges, improved voice communications, digital autopilot and flight director and a digital weather radar.

Flightglobal's MiliCAS database says the air force operates five C-130H transports and five KC-130B/H tankers. "This aircraft will be on a par with the RSAF's younger fleet of C-130H aircraft in terms of mission availability," ST Aero says.
