Sir George Edwards, aircraft engineer and UK industrial policy shaper, died on 2 March aged 94. Edwards joined Vickers-Armstrong in 1935 and led the design team on projects such as the Viking, Viscount and Valiant before he was appointed managing director in 1953, and oversaw the development of the Vanguard turboprop. Edwards is best remembered for his dealings with the UK governments of the 1960s and 1970s, and his bids to save projects such as the V-1000 military transport, and its civil variant, the VC7 transatlantic jet aircraft programme.
