Sira Elecro-Optics has been awarded a contract by the UK Defence and Evaluation Research Agency to evaluate the use of p-type as opposed to the usual n-type semiconductors for storing charge in charge-coupled devices (CCDs) for space applications. In theory, p-type doping should harden the crystal lattice to radiation (proton) damage, enhancing performance in applications such as star-trackers.
