Chilean investigators are looking into an incident involving a Sky Airline Airbus A319 which returned to Santiago after losing an engine cowl.
The airline says the aircraft – which was operating flight H2112 to Copiapo – suffered the “partial detachment” of a section of the engine cover.
Sky insists that the event did not put passenger safety at risk, and customers were transferred to a different flight.
The carrier issued its notification on 14 October, and surveillance data from Santiago shows a Sky service with a matching flight number, on this date, returning to the airport immediately after departure.
Video on social media channels purporting to show the aircraft involved show the cowlings being torn off the left-hand engine of the jet during the take-off roll.
While investigators have yet to detail the circumstances of the event, the situation is characteristic of the behaviour of engine cowls which have not been securely latched shut before departure.
Sky’s A319s are equipped with CFM International CFM56 powerplants.
