A LOCKHEED Martin P-3C was used to successfully launch a McDonnell Douglas (MDC) Standoff Land Attack Missile (SLAM) in a test conducted off Point Mugu Naval Air Station, California in September.

The P-3C co-pilot controlled the SLAM for the firing and guided it on to a target on San Nicholas Island. The firing was part of a SLAM/P-3C integration programme which has been under way since 1992, and was a highlight of the formal certification process begun in July 1995.

MDC missile systems vice-president James Restelli says: "This is the first P-3C SLAM launch."
