McDonnell Douglas is to conduct a ship-launched flight-test demonstration of the Stand off Land Attack Missile (SLAM) to the US Navy under a $3 million contract. Two missiles will be fitted with ship-launch boosters used on Harpoon anti-ship missiles and fired from a test ship. One will be controlled by a Sikorsky SH-60 LAMPS Mk III helicopter and the other by a McDonnell Douglas F-18. The SLAM is launched and controlled by carrier-based aircraft, although one was previously test fired from a US Navy surface ship in 1990.
