Smiths Detection has cleared the final hurdle before its man-portable chemical agent detector (MCAD) goes into full production and service with the UK MoD.
The MCAD technology passed an MoD final design review at the Smiths Detection facility in Watford, UK, on the eve of Farnborough. The review, carried out by the MoD's Defence Procurement Agency NBC IPT, covered technical, scientific and commercial aspects. The £20 million ($30 million) MCAD contract was awarded following an international competitive tender in January 2000.
The technology is part of the UK's new two-tier approach to chemical warfare detection. The first tier is provided by the Lightweight Chemical Agent Detector (LCAD) – also manufactured by Smiths Detection.
