Eurofighter will be equipped with the latest hi-tech multifunctional "head-down" display from Smiths Industries.

The company has been contracted by British Aerospace to supply the display for the Eurofighter EF2000, three in each single cockpit and six in the twin seats variants.

Using the latest active matrix liquid crystal display technology, it offers improved performance, greater reliability and weight savings over the cathode ray tube version fitted to the prototype aircraft, presenting significant life-cycle cost improvements.

The display has been evaluated by BAe human factors engineers and pilots to ensure it meets all "man machine interface" requirements of the cockpit.

Eurofighter EF2000 is equipped with a number of Smiths Industries displays and systems.

When the aircraft enters service in 2001, it will be the first production aircraft to use direct voice input (DVI) to control the cockpit by voice command.
