Eurocontrol says the introduction of the new 8.33kHz radio communications channel spacing on 7 October went "better than expected", with worries about a temporary increase in delays not being borne out.

The scheme reduces channel spacing from the original 25kHz, creating new frequencies and enabling the provision of additional air traffic control capacity through the creation of extra sectors. Eurocontrol points out, however, that capacity improvements will be "up to the member states. We have no control over what they do with their sectors".

The hope is that continued smooth implementation will reduce delays next summer. The requirement for 8.33kHz equipment to be fitted will be "vigorously enforced", says Eurocontrol.
