Increased awareness of the hazards of foreign object damage (FOD) has prompted Wisconsin-based tool manufacturer Snap-on Tools International (Stand E910) to feature tool control foam inserts at the show.

The inserts are sheets of foam with precise recesses cut out to accommodate a range of tools. As each tool has its own space, any missing parts are easily spotted.

"Aircraft parts have been ruined by people leaving tools behind when servicing parts such as turbine engines," says field manager Michel C Homsi.

"This is not only costly but also dangerous. Aircraft manufacturers usually stipulate that maintenance workers must show they have implemented measures against FOD and these inserts prove they have."
