Snecma and Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC) are jointly developing the 53-71kN-thrust SPW14 turbofan to power new-generation regional jets in the 70-seat class, such as the proposed Aero International (Regional) AIR70 and the Bombardier CRJ-X. Snecma/P&WC hope that AI(R) will favour the SPW14 as it is an all-new design, unlike the rival offerings from Allison (AE3012) and General Electric (CF34), which are derivative engines.

The SPW14 is currently configured with a wide-chord solid-blade fan, driven by a three-stage low-pressure (LP) turbine. The compressor has four axial LP and one centrifugal high-pressure (HP) stage, driven by a two-stage HP turbine.

Snecma has secured responsibility for the "hot section" of the engine.

Initial component testing is due to begin later this year, with a formal launch decision expected in early 1997.
