Bulgaria has approved a NATO investment of €59 million ($79 million) to be used for infrastructure improvements at its air force's two main fast-jet air bases, writes Alexander Mladenov in Sofia.
The work, involving 18 support construction sites at Graf Ignatievo and Bezmer airfields, will see the refurbishment and enlargement of existing facilities, plus some new construction, to improve the bases' capabilities.
At Graf Ignatievo – Bulgaria's largest and most modern airbase – new facilities will be built to support aerial refuelling tanker operations, while at Bezmer the runway will be resurfaced and lengthened, with new apron/aircraft parking areas added to support the operation of heavy transport aircraft.
