Southwest Airlines will begin its new flights between Houston Hobby and Washington National from 4 August, following its win of a pair of slot exemptions at the Washington DC airport.
The Dallas-based carrier will operate a daily roundtrip flight between the two cities, it says.
Earlier this month, the US Department of Transportation awarded Southwest the slots, stipulating that the airline must begin the new flights by 5 August. JetBlue Airways and US Airways had also applied for the slots, which were freed up after Spirit Airlines moved its Fort Lauderdale flights from Washington National to Baltimore-Washington International airport in September 2012.
Southwest will be the only carrier operating between Washington National and Houston Hobby. United Airlines serves Houston Intercontinental non-stop from both Washington National and Washington Dulles airports.
