A Soyuz booster was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, on 21 October, carrying the Soyuz TM33 spacecraft which docked to the International Space Station (ISS) two days later for an eight day stay. Security measures were tightened at Baikonur for the launch due to military action in Afghanistan. The three crew members include European Space Agency/CNES astronaut Claudie Haignere who is conducting the French Andromede science mission. The crew will return in the older TM32 vehicle, which is docked to the ISS' Pirs module, leaving the fresh craft docked to the Zarya module for emergency use by the station's third expedition crew.
