With aviation in the UK celebrating its centenary, Britain’s premier aviation magazine – Flight International – was also in the mood for partying last night at Farnborough as it too raised a glass or two of a specially-created ‘Flight purple’ cocktail called ‘Endless Flight’ in honour of its 100th birthday.
At a glittering cocktail reception held in TAG Farnborough airport’s futuristic terminal building, around 150 VIP guests, many of them captains of the British aviation industry, toasted Flight International and wished it luck as it moves into its second century.
Hosted by the weekly magazine’s editor Murdo Morrison, the reception honoured those – people, aircraft and events - that had contributed most to aviation over the past century, according to the magazine’s readers and users of flightglobal.com over the past few months.
In pride of place outside the reception – gracing the tarmac as only a star can – was Rolls-Royce’s pristine Spitfire PR Mk XIX - which was representing the type that won the award for the greatest military aircraft of the past century.
More than 18,000 people voted for their “greatest” aerospace moments and products with the top vote going to the first Moon landing.
