Thanks to everybody who suggested an explanation for last week’s image.  Frank Fischer in Braunschweig, Germany, correctly identified the image showing the Freedom -7 capsule on the Redstone launcher, for the first suborbital flight by Alan B Shepard, which marked the first US manned spaceflight.
