A cadre of 14 Space Shuttle astronauts has begun intensive training in preparation for the spacewalks required for initial in-orbit construction of the International Space Station (ISS).

"It is important for us to begin work now to train the crews who will support Space Station assembly flights," says David Leestma, director of Flight Crew Operations for the Station.

The specific assignments are for the US assembly flights STS88, 92, 97, 98, 99 and 100 through to August 1999.o
