The Spanish air force has selected a Rafael tactical long-range oblique photography (LOROP) system to equip its Boeing EF-18 Hornets in a deal valued at $14 million. Rafael developed the LOROP system from its Litening targeting pod, which Spain recently selected for its EF-18s. Other bidders were Fairchild, Raytheon, Recon/ Optical and Thomson-CSF. David Zait, head of the Rafael's Litening division, says the system was developed by making small changes to the Litening. Rafael says the development will lead to a dual purpose system capable of targeting and reconnaissance.
