Spectrum Aeronautical will incorporate the lightweight fire suppression system designed by Eclipse Aviation.
"PhostrEx is one of the most clever things I’ve seen in a long time and that’s why we had to have it," says Spectrum chairman Linden Blue.
"That 1.8lb [0.8kg] sounds good to me." Eclipse chairman Vern Raburn highlights the system’s size as equivalent to a shotgun shell.
He compares its 1.8lb with a typical system’s weight of 30lb, and says the reliability of PhostrEx led the Federal Aviation Administration to allow one system for each engine rather than two for redundancy.
The system earned a 2007 Stratospheric Ozone Protection Award from the Environmental Protection Agency. It replaces Halon, the most popular fire suppression agent, which depletes the Earth’s ozone layer. PhostrEX is a carcinogen, but after it extinguishes a fire in one tenth of a second it combines with moisture in the air and becomes inert.
