Singapore Technologies Aerospace (ST Aero) has finalised an agreement to establish a maintenance, repair and overhaul facility at the former Howard AFB in Panama, with Copa as its first customer, writes Nicholas Ionides.
ST Aero announced in February that it planned to open an MRO facility in Panama and said at the time that it expected a formal agreement would be finalised within a couple of months. It also said it was hoping to attract Copa as a customer.
The company says now that a formal agreement has been signed with AAEEPP, the Panamanian government agency overseeing the redevelopment of the former Howard air base into a special economic zone, covering a long-term lease agreement for the new facility, to be called Panama Aerospace Engineering (PAE).
ST Aero adds that, at the same time, it has won a maintenance agreement with Copa covering the airline's 22 Boeing 737-700/800s, adding that it aims to secure "other customers from Central, North and South America". Maintenance and modification services will be offered for both Airbus and Boeing aircraft types.
