A380 mock-up gives designers a nudge

Time will tell just how the airlines make use of the voluminous space available in the "jumbo jet for the 21st century", the Airbus A380. Will it be the sauna and shopping arcade concept, or posteriors on seats on high density runs? Airbus is helping their imaginations to run creatively over the possibilities afforded by the vast cabin area. In a full size mock-up of the aircraft at Airbus HQ at Toulouse, a forward section has been equipped with futuristic seats, a dining area and the flight of stairs that links the top and bottom decks. "Think of this as a concept car rather than a mock-up," says Robert Lange, A380 marketing director. "It was very important how we did it. We did it much earlier than on any other programme. We introduced the mock-up before any significant items were introduced. "The most innovative carriers had the opportunity to conceive ideas for the cabin." Airlines have a choice of how to use the space and the aircraft's promised economics to either offer more by way of services, or reduce seat costs. Whatever the outcome, economy passengers will benefit from 1in (2.5cm) of extra space through wider seats. "There will be 5% more personal space for economy passengers," says Lange. In a mock-up of a possible first class cabin, there are concept seats in discreet areas, and a deluxe separate bar and dining area.
