Thierry Fautrel W167A rare moment outside of the Oscars.

All 300 people enjoying dinner at the glorious Raffles Hotel rose to their feet as one, to give a standing ovation to one man – Thierry Fautrel (pictured left).

Fautrel was chief purser on Air France flight 358 that overran the runway and caught fire after landing at Toronto’s Pearson Airport last year.

Fautrel’s team ensured that every one of the 297 passengers survived through an evacuation that took less than two minutes. Fautrel received an award for Aviation Excellence, presented by Flight International. In an acceptance speech he said the award was for all of the 12 crew and reemphasised the role of flight crew in safety operations.
