Former Delsey Airlines and Sabena employees are setting up a Belgian long-haul operator called Belgian Universal Airways (BUA) which will operate Airbus A340s on low- fare services.

The carrier, which will be 49% owned by L-Air Holding of Toronto, Canada, will serve Asian and US destinations from Brussels.

Headed by Raymond Nicolai, a former chief pilot of Delsey and Sabena, BUA is due to start operations by June.

The airline plans to acquire up to five Airbus A340-300s this year, the first two of which are ex-Singapore Airlines aircraft being leased from Boeing.

Initial routes will include services such as Los Angeles to Yerevan, Armenia, and Montreal and Toronto to New Delhi. Services to the French overseas territories from Paris Orly Airport have also been mooted.
