Jørgen Lindegaard's career has been predominantly in telecommunications. He has held a number of senior positions since 1975, including president of Fyns Telefon, Københavns Telefon and a director of TeleDanmark, before he joined GN Store Nord in 1996, becoming its president in 1997.

He took up his position at SAS on 8 May 2001 after being named in November 2000 to succeed Jan Stenberg.

Lindegaard is the second consecutive Dane and non-aviation executive to lead SAS. He describes his management style as "decentralised", with the emphasis on building a talented team he can trust to implement a major turnaround.

In a company with 31,000 staff and many subsidiaries and divisions, Lindegaard recognises the need to spread the word personally.

He has a thoughtful manner, with a directness that extends to dealings with unions. "I have an open, visible approach and always tell them what I think," he says.

A civil engineer with a degree in electronics, Lindegaard retains an interest in technical matters by working on his pride and joy - a 1968 Jaguar Mk 2 car - to keep it on the road.
