AirAsia and AirAsia X have increased their claim against Malaysia Airports Holdings (MAHB) by around MYR80 million ($19.5 million), as it presses for mediation with the airport operator.
The low-cost carrier says that the "main part" of the MYR480 million in claims comes from a loss of customers in the last four years, owing to disruptions and poor condition of the KLIA2 terminal at Kuala Lumpur International airport.
The two carriers had previously indicated that they would make a claim for MYR400 million against the operator for the disruptions, which include ruptures to underground fuel lines at the terminal, and closures of KLIA's runway 3.
AirAsia and AirAsia X are seeking mediation on the matter through provisions in the Malaysia Aviation Commission Act, which also allows for the commission to arbitrate the dispute if the mediation fails.
They are also relying on those provisions to seek the dismissal of a lawsuit brought by MAHB in December against them seeking a total of MYR36.4 million in allegedly unpaid passenger service charges.
The two airlines have filed a motion to dismiss the suit, claiming that MAHB did not abide by the dispute resolution mechanisms contained in the Act before launching the court action.
