Lufthansa Group is to establish long-haul Eurowings operations from Frankfurt, complementing the similar services offered from the group’s second hub at Munich.
Eurowings will use a total of seven Airbus A330s for the expansion, configured with 310 seats, with some of the fleet operated by SunExpress Deutschland.
Capacity will be “distributed evenly” between Frankfurt and Munich, says Lufthansa Group.
The Frankfurt operations will commence in autumn this year, ahead of the winter season.
Eurowings will offer long-haul flights from the city to the island destinations of Barbados and Mauritius, beginning in October.
It will also serve the Namibian capital Windhoek.
Eurowings already has a long-haul network from Munich, which opened last year, but it will expand this winter with services to Bangkok.
Lufthansa network airlines chief commercial officer Harry Hohmeister says the decision to expand to Frankfurt is “consistent” with its Munich operation and intended to meet increasing demand.
“We have proven that we can successfully manage multiple brands and hubs centrally,” he adds. “We will now be employing this know-how more strongly in the tourism segment.”
Eurowings chief executive Thorsten Dirks says the expansion is the “right strategic step” for Lufthansa Group, bringing together the low-cost structure of Eurowings with the sales and marketing power of Lufthansa at its main base.
